What's left behind the scenes

  • In the first episode, Ford and Tench travel to Iowa while the song "Hold the Line" by the American rock band Toto plays on the radio. According to the plot, the action takes place in 1977, but this song was not released until October 1978.
  • The makeup team spent 6 hours transforming Oliver Cooper and Damon Herriman into David Berkowitz and Charles Manson.
  • Charlize Theron and David Fincher presented the project to HBO in 2009, but the network passed on it.
  • Anna Torv's character (Dr. Wendy Carr) is based on Ann Burgess—a doctor of medicine, forensic psychiatric expert, and FBI employee.
  • Each of the killer characters is based on a real murderer who operated in the US at the end of the 20th century. In the first season, the agents encounter Edmund Kemper, Richard Speck, and Jerry Brudos. Additionally, Dennis Rader is shown at the beginning of each episode. In the second season, Charles Manson, Paul Bateson, Elmer Wayne Henley, William "Junior" Pierce, David Berkowitz, and William Henry Hance appear.
  • While listing notorious killers for an interview, one of the detectives mentions Herbert Mullin, who killed people in the Santa Cruz County area, just as Ed Kemper did. Both operated in the same county at the same time, so for a long while, it was believed that one person was responsible for the murders. When police arrested Mullin after he shot an elderly man in broad daylight in front of witnesses, everyone was convinced that the wanted killer had been caught. However, three months later, Edmund Kemper surrendered to the police and confessed to the murders.
  • The scenes of Edmund Kemper's interview in the California prison of Vacaville were filmed on the premises of the former Pennsylvania State Prison in Greensburg. The scenes with serial killer Jerry Brudos were filmed in a cage specifically constructed for this purpose in the prison gym.
  • The interview scenes are based on real conversations with serial killers, with some dialogues repeating their words verbatim.
  • The prototypes for the characters Holden Ford and Bill Tench are John Douglas and Robert Ressler, the pioneers of criminal profiling.
  • Holden and Ford are the names of car manufacturers. The two companies have long been rivals, especially in the V8 Supercars series (a type of touring car racing most popular in Australia and New Zealand). Therefore, in the third episode of the second season, when Holden Ford is checking into a hotel, he mentions that his name is an old joke in Australia.
