What's left behind the scenes
- At one point during filming, director and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn told cinematographer Darius Khondji that he wanted to shoot the series on an iPhone (this happened while both were reviewing the footage on their phones). This idea had to be abandoned due to insufficient resolution.
- According to director and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn, the title of the series came to him while he was finishing work on the psychological thriller "The Neon Demon" (2016).
- During the series premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, director and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn ordered the screening to begin not with the first episode, as is customary, but with episodes four and five. He wanted the audience in Cannes to experience the series the way teenagers consume digital content—not necessarily in strict order from the first page to the last, but often jumping from one narrative fragment to another.
