What's left behind the scenes
- The series is based on true events—the escape of Richard Matt and David Sweat from the Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, 2015.
- The script was written two months after the described events. There was almost no information about the escape, and Ben Stiller rejected the script, claiming it was a fabrication. It was only some time later that an official statement about the incident was released, signed by the New York State Inspector General.
- Patricia Arquette, while in makeup, chatted on set with Benicio del Toro and David Morse. They didn't recognize her and assumed she was some kind of 'crazy lady'.
- Many of the roles for law enforcement officers and support staff were played by people who were direct participants in those events.
- For the role of David Sweat, Paul Dano gained nearly 10 kg of muscle mass.
