Short description

Alex Godman, the English-raised son of Russian mafia exiles, has spent his life trying to escape the shadow of their past, building his own legitimate business and forging a life with his girlfriend Rebecca. But when a murder forces his family's past to return to threaten them, Alex is drawn into the criminal underworld and must confront his values to protect those he loves.

What's left behind the scenes

A significant portion of the scenes set in Prague and Moscow were actually filmed in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
The plot is based on a book about global crime written ten years ago by British journalist Misha Glenny. Many of the crimes and scams described in the book are featured in the series, but the core of the show is based on the chapters regarding Russian crime. Some of the series' characters are based on real people and actual events. The title 'McMafia' refers to how criminal syndicates 'lend' their name to smaller criminal groups for a fee (for example, how small Russian organized crime groups use the name 'Chechen mafia' because it makes intimidation and extortion easier, as the 'Chechen mafia' is widely feared). It is something of a franchise, much like the McDonald's franchise.
