What's left behind the scenes
- The plot is based on a book about global crime written ten years ago by British journalist Misha Glenny. Many of the crimes and scams described in the book are featured in the series, but the core of the show is based on the chapters regarding Russian crime. Some of the series' characters are based on real people and actual events. The title 'McMafia' refers to how criminal syndicates 'lend' their name to smaller criminal groups for a fee (for example, how small Russian organized crime groups use the name 'Chechen mafia' because it makes intimidation and extortion easier, as the 'Chechen mafia' is widely feared). It is something of a franchise, much like the McDonald's franchise.
- A significant portion of the scenes set in Prague and Moscow were actually filmed in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
