What's left behind the scenes

  • The series claims to feature characters from Nicholas Hytner's film 'The Crucible' (1996). The Putnams and the Hawthornes are Puritan families who lived in Salem, Massachusetts. John Hawthorne once participated in the trials of the so-called 'Salem witches,' during which many accusations were leveled against members of the Putnam family.
  • Stolas, a servant of Wardwell, is neither a crow nor a raven. He is a hybrid of both birds—he has the size and proportions of a raven, but the beak shape of a crow.
  • The opening scene in the cinema was filmed in the same theater used for the filming of 'It' (Tomy Lee Wallace, 1990).
  • The series takes place in the same universe as the comic-book-based series 'Riverdale' (2017), where Sabrina was one of the characters given her own storyline.
  • Doctor Sapirstein, mentioned by Mrs. Wardwell in the first episode, shares his name with the satanist doctor in Roman Polanski's thriller 'Rosemary's Baby' (1968).
  • The series contains references to the film 'Suspiria' (Luca Guadagnino, 2018) and the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' franchise. The glass ceiling in the dining room is identical to the one in 'Suspiria', and the scene where Ross Lynch's character falls asleep with headphones on mirrors a similar scene featuring Johnny Depp's character in the franchise films.
  • The spell Sabrina uses to summon the witches is taken from the lines of the witches themselves in Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth' (1603-1606).
  • Kiernan Shipka came to her first screen test for the role of Sabrina with long brown hair. She was asked to get a haircut, lighten her hair, and return again; she was only cast after the second attempt. Ross Lynch, on the other hand, was asked to make his hair brown—the producers decided that with blonde hair, he looked too much like Kiernan Shipka.
  • In Sabrina's bedroom hangs a poster for the film 'Häxan' (Benjamin Christensen, 1922), which combines elements of documentary and fiction film.
