Short description

Set 58 years before Battlestar Galactica, Caprica follows two rival families - the Graystones and the Adamas - as they grow, compete, and thrive in the vibrant world of the peaceful 12 Colonies, living in a society close to our own. Entangled in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons, the two houses go toe-to-toe, blending action with corporate conspiracy and sexual politics.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of Cyrus, Daniel Greystone's right-hand man, was originally written for a young actor; however, director Eric Stoltz saw Hiro Kanagawa's screen tests for another project and suggested him for the part.
  • Ancient Greek was used as the Tauronian language.
  • A prop animatronic robot, the 'Cylon U-87,' was specially constructed for the series at a cost of $100,000. It was primarily used in scenes where actors interacted with it while it remained completely or nearly motionless.
  • The screenplay was based on two different ideas. In 2005, Ronald D. Moore and producer David Eicke (who was involved in the creation of the series 'Battlestar Galactica,' 2004-2009) announced their desire to create a spin-off prequel titled 'Caprica,' set during the time humans created the first Cylons. They already had initial sketches of the plot, but they were too busy working on 'Battlestar Galactica' to devote much time to thinking about the prequel. Six months later, screenwriter and producer Remy Aubuchon proposed a project to NBCUniversal about artificial intelligence and the use of robots as servants. The company decided that Aubuchon's ideas would blend perfectly with Moore and Eicke's concepts for the future 'Caprica' series, and brought the three of them together.
