Short description

The Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins when King Viserys breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.

What's left behind the scenes

  • As in the series 'Game of Thrones,' many characters in 'House of the Dragon' are portrayed as older than they are described in Martin's novels. King Viserys Targaryen is shown as an elderly man with gray hair. Rhaenyra is initially shown as a teenager. In the original source, Viserys was not even 30 when his wife Aemma died, and Rhaenyra was only 8 years old when she was named Viserys's heir.
  • The Valyrian steel blade carried by Viserys is the same one used in the assassination attempt on Bran in the first season, and the one Arya carried in the final season of 'Game of Thrones'.
  • Olivia Cooke mentioned that she initially auditioned for the role of Rhaenyra, and only later was she cast as Alicent.
  • Milly Alcock and Emma D'Arcy (who played Rhaenyra, the former in her youth and the latter in adulthood) did not speak to each other during filming, and when scenes with one of them were being shot, the other was not present on set. This was necessary so that the actresses could embody the image of Rhaenyra independently of one another.
  • The Iron Throne was changed compared to how it appeared in the 'Game of Thrones' series. It became larger and more asymmetrical, which more closely aligns with its description in George R.R. Martin's novels.
  • Following the success of 'Game of Thrones,' showrunners, producers, and writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were offered the chance to produce the prequel series, but they declined the offer to pursue other projects as part of an agreement with Netflix.
  • George R.R. Martin based the Dance of the Dragons on the period of The Anarchy—a feudal conflict over the English throne from 1135 to 1154 following the death of King Henry I.
