What's left behind the scenes
- It was initially intended to be a feature film. Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp expressed interest in the project for some time, but later moved on to other ventures. Director Peter Weir was involved for a while, and actor Joel Edgerton was expected to participate, but it was eventually decided to produce a series instead of a movie.
- Shantaram is a Hindu name given to Lin, meaning "peaceful person."
