Jason Momoa, 50 Cent and Roman Reigns Join the New Street Fighter

Street Fighter, a new live-action adaptation of Capcom’s cult fighting game series, reaches cinemas in October. The US release is set for 16 October, including IMAX screens. It is the third attempt to bring the game to the screen, after the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Director Kitao Sakurai has assembled an unusual cast of Hollywood stars, WWE wrestlers, a rapper, a UFC champion and a country singer.

What the film is about

The story is set in 1993. Former partners Ryu and Ken Masters have drifted apart, but Chun-Li persuades both of them to enter the World Warrior Tournament. What they do not know is that the tournament hides a conspiracy that will force them to fight each other — and their own past.

The film is an action comedy.

How the project changed

Legendary acquired the live-action film and TV rights to Street Fighter in April 2023. Danny and Michael Philippou, the brothers behind the horror hit Talk to Me, were first attached to direct, but left in June 2024 to make their next film. In February 2025 the job went to Kitao Sakurai, director of the comedy Bad Trip and The Eric Andre Show.

The distributor changed too. The film was originally due in March 2026 through Sony, but that deal expired, and Paramount took over distribution in September 2025.

The shoot

Filming ran from 18 August to 12 November 2025 at Disney Studios Australia under the working title Punch. T.J. Fixman and Sakurai wrote the screenplay from a story by Dalan Musson and Gary Dauberman, and Ken Seng is the cinematographer. The running time is 119 minutes.

Jason Momoa plays Blanka and is also a producer. The story is already expanding onto the page: Legendary Comics is publishing an anthology of prequel comics, and Dastmalchian himself is writing the Bison story.
