Mannequin

Jonathan Switcher is a struggling artist in Philadelphia who drifts through odd jobs because he cannot resist adding a creative touch to even the dullest work. A chance encounter with an older woman leads to a position at a department store, where he recognizes one of the mannequins as a figure he assembled at an earlier job. When they are alone, the mannequin comes to life as Emmy, a woman from ancient Egypt placed under a spell. She becomes his collaborator, and the striking window displays they create together help the struggling store. The store's scheming manager and jealous rivals in the trade try to derail Jonathan, while he and Emmy grow close despite the obvious complication of her condition.

Michael Gottlieb directed and co-wrote the film with Edward Rugoff, and it was his first feature as director; he went on to make The Shrimp on the Barbie, Mr. Nanny and A Kid in King Arthur's Court. Andrew McCarthy plays Jonathan and Kim Cattrall plays Emmy, with Estelle Getty, James Spader and G.W. Bailey in supporting roles.

Released in February 1987, the film had a budget of about 6 million dollars and took roughly 43 million worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb it holds a 6 out of 10 from around 40,000 votes, while on TMDB it rates 6.9 from a much smaller base of 851. A film critics' rating of 3.9 from 40 reviews sits well below both audience scores, an unusually wide gap.
