Get Rich or Die Tryin'

Get Rich or Die Tryin' is a crime drama about Marcus, a young man from New York who grows up surrounded by the drug trade after his mother is killed. He becomes a dealer himself, drawn into a violent world of rival gangs, while nursing a long-held ambition to make it as a rapper. The film follows his years spent between street crime and the lyrics he writes, with his grandmother, his girlfriend Charlene and his friend Bama among the few people close to him, until a brush with death forces him to choose a different path.

The film was directed by Jim Sheridan, released in 2005 and based on the life of rapper 50 Cent, who plays Marcus. Its cast includes Joy Bryant, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Terrence Howard and Viola Davis. It came sixth in Sheridan's directing career, following In America, and was written by Terence Winter with Jimmy Iovine and Chris Lighty producing.

Made for about 40 million dollars, it took in roughly 46 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.6 from around 54,000 votes. On TMDB it holds 6.8 from around a thousand votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.7 from 120 reviews, well below the audience scores.
