Short description
Slevin's life has fallen apart: he loses his apartment, finds his girlfriend with another man, and has his identification stolen. He travels to New York to stay in an apartment belonging to his friend Nick Fisher, and is promptly mistaken for Nick by men collecting a large gambling debt. That mistake pulls him into a long-running feud between two of the city's leading criminals, the Boss and the Rabbi, former partners who are now bitter enemies. One of them wants revenge for his son's murder, and the plan to settle the score involves forcing a debtor to carry it out. Slevin finds himself under constant watch, with a police detective and a professional killer both taking an interest in him, and has to work out how to survive.
Paul McGuigan directed from a screenplay by Jason Smilovic. It was McGuigan's fifth feature, following Wicker Park and The Reckoning and arriving before Push and Victor Frankenstein. Josh Hartnett plays Slevin, with Morgan Freeman as the Boss, Ben Kingsley as the Rabbi, Lucy Liu as Lindsey, Bruce Willis as Mr. Goodkat and Stanley Tucci as Detective Brikowski.
Made for about 27 million dollars, it took roughly 56 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.7 from over 322,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 from more than 4,600 votes, both well above the critics' rating of 5.9 from 154 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was released in Australia under the title "The Wrong Man".
- While Jason Smilovich was writing the script in New York, Josh Hartnett was his neighbor. At the beginning of the film, Sleevin frequently wears a towel around his waist, which is because Smilovich often saw Hartnett like that. He also believed that this detail made Sleevin's image more vulnerable.
- An X-ray of a hand can be seen in the coroner's office. The hand belongs to director Paul McGuigan.
- As Slevin walks down the corridor to meet the Goodkat, his hairstyle changes in each shot.
- In fact, 'Lucky Number Slevin' refers to the horse Lucky Slevin, which participated in a race in one of the film's scenes. However, due to the inaccuracy of the film's initial translation, the title 'Lucky Number Slevin' became established in the Russian translation.
