A documentary crew follows Ben, a burglar and serial killer, through his daily routine in Belgium. He talks to the camera about his methods, his tastes in music and poetry, and his views on subjects such as housing and violence, while carrying on with his crimes. What begins as detached observation gives way as the filmmakers grow closer to him, joining in his activities and eventually taking part themselves, until their own involvement carries consequences.
Man Bites Dog is a Belgian black comedy directed by Benoît Poelvoorde, Rémy Belvaux and André Bonzel, who also produced it and appear in it, with Poelvoorde in the leading role as Ben and Belvaux and Bonzel as the crew members Rémy and André. The screenplay was written by Poelvoorde, André Bonzel and Vincent Tavier. The cast also includes Jacqueline Poelvoorde-Pappaert as Ben's mother, Valérie Parent and Édith Le Merdy. Made on a budget of about one million dollars, the film became the directing trio's best-known work.
Audience response has been favourable: it holds a rating of 7.4 from around 46,000 votes on IMDb and 7.2 from over a thousand votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 19 reviews places it in similar territory, so the film has found comparable approval among reviewers and viewers alike.
