The Strangers: Chapter 1

A young couple, Maya and Ryan, are driving across the country to start a new life together when their car breaks down in a small Oregon town. The locals take an unusual interest in the strangers, and with no way to continue their journey, the couple spends the night in an isolated house. Three masked figures arrive and terrorize them through the night, attacking without apparent reason.

This horror thriller is directed by Renny Harlin, the twenty-third of the twenty-eight films he has directed to date, following Refuge and preceding The Strangers: Chapter 2. The screenplay is by Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland and Amber Loutfi, and the cast includes Madelaine Petsch as Maya, Froy Gutierrez as Ryan, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, Ella Bruccoleri and Richard Brake. It runs 91 minutes and was produced across the United Kingdom, Spain, Romania and the United States.

Made for a modest 9 million dollars, the film took about 48 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. Audience response was mixed: it holds a 4.7 rating from roughly 29,000 votes on IMDb and a 5.7 from over 800 votes on TMDB, while its critics' score stands at 4.3 from 108 reviews.
