The Ice Pirates is set in a future where water has become the rarest substance in the galaxy. Control over the remaining ice lies with a ruling trade oligarchy, and a band of space pirates survives by raiding shipments of it. Their fortunes change when Princess Karina recruits the pirate Jason and his crew to help her find her missing father. The search sets the pirates against the repressive regime that monopolizes the galaxy's water supply, with a romance developing between Karina and Jason along the way.
Stewart Raffill directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Stanford Sherman, with John Foreman producing. It was released in 1984, between Raffill's The Philadelphia Experiment the same year and Mac and Me in 1988, and was his third feature after The Adventures of the Wilderness Family in 1975. The cast is led by Robert Urich as Jason and Mary Crosby as Princess Karina, alongside Michael D. Roberts, Anjelica Huston, John Matuszak and Ron Perlman. Made for a budget of about nine million dollars, it took roughly fourteen million dollars worldwide.
The film is a science fiction comedy with action and adventure elements. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from about thirteen thousand votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 5.7, from over two hundred votes. A critics' rating comes to 4.5 out of ten from twelve reviews, below both audience scores.
