This crime thriller follows two parallel narratives linked by an obsession with beauty and the divine. In modern New York, a writer named Nick is hired by the mafia to authenticate a rediscovered original manuscript of the Divine Comedy stolen from the Vatican. Tempted by the find, Nick steals the document and flees with a woman named Giulietta, sparking a dangerous pursuit. Simultaneously, the film depicts Dante Alighieri in the 14th century as he struggles through an unhappy marriage and travels to Sicily to find the inspiration necessary to write his masterpiece.
Directed by Julian Schnabel, this is the fifth feature film in his career, following Basquiat, Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and At Eternity's Gate. Schnabel also co-wrote the screenplay with Louise Kugelberg. The film features Oscar Isaac in the dual roles of Nick and Dante, alongside Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Louis Cancelmi, and Sabrina Impacciatore.
Produced by MeMo Films, DreamCrew, Indiana Production, and Rahway Road Productions, the movie had a budget of 25 million USD. Audience reception has been mixed, with a rating of 4.6/10 on IMDb from 976 votes and 5.4/10 on TMDB from 61 votes. Film critics provided a lower average rating of 4.2/10 based on 21 reviews.
