Short description

Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of Riley, now a teenager. Her emotional headquarters undergoes a sudden upheaval to make room for something unexpected: a set of new emotions led by Anxiety. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who have long handled Riley's feelings together, are unsure how to respond to the arrival of these newcomers. The film is an animated family adventure that continues the story begun in Inside Out.

Kelsey Mann directed, following his earlier short Party Central, with a screenplay by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein and production by Mark Nielsen. Amy Poehler voices Joy, Maya Hawke voices Anxiety, and Kensington Tallman voices Riley; Liza Lapira, Tony Hale and Lewis Black voice Disgust, Fear and Anger. Thirty-eight cast members and seventy-two crew members are credited. Made by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar on a reported budget of 200 million US dollars, it is one of the most expensive animated productions of its time.

The film was released on June 11, 2024, and runs 97 minutes. Its worldwide box office of about 1.7 billion US dollars places it among the highest-grossing animated films ever made. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from roughly 246,000 votes, while on TMDB it also sits at 7.5 from about 6,993 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 329 reviews is slightly above both audience scores, indicating broad approval across critics and viewers alike.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Phyllis Smith, who voiced Sadness, had already retired and did not want to travel to Los Angeles for voice work, so a recording studio was found for her in the state of Missouri.
  • The initial script envisioned Riley attending a school event, but this was replaced with Riley going to hockey camp.
  • Lili Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Diane Kruger, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub were considered for the voice of Disgust.
