Marion, recently separated and hoping to close out the summer by the sea, brings her teenage cousin Pauline along for a holiday on the Normandy coast. There they fall in with three men: Pierre, an old friend whose feelings for Marion have never cooled; Henri, a talkative adventurer who resists committing to anyone; and Sylvain, a boy closer to Pauline's own age. Marion drifts toward Henri despite doubting that anything lasting will come of it, while Pauline, eager for her first experiences with love, grows involved with Sylvain. The adults' shifting attractions and crossed intentions draw the teenager into the middle of a tangle of desire and misunderstanding.
Éric Rohmer directed and wrote the film, the third in his series of "Comedies and Proverbs." It was released in March 1983, running 94 minutes, and came between The Aviator's Wife and The Green Ray, the seventh of the thirteen features he directed in chronological order. Produced by Margaret Ménégoz through Les Films Ariane and Les Films du Losange, it stars Arielle Dombasle, Amanda Langlet, Pascal Greggory, Féodor Atkine, Simon de La Brosse and Rosette.
Audiences rate the film positively but not extravagantly, at 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from a far smaller sample of 266. A critics' rating of 8.8 out of 10, based on 16 reviews, places it noticeably higher among reviewers than among general viewers.
