Short description

During a war between humans and insect-like aliens, a group of Federation soldiers is forced to retreat into a deserted outpost after an ambush. Joined by the experienced but controversial Captain Dax, the unit attempts to reactivate the base's defenses. While they fight to survive the external onslaught, they discover that a more cunning threat has infiltrated their own ranks.

Directed by Phil Tippett, this film is the second work in his directorial chronology, following Prehistoric Beast and preceding Mad God. The screenplay was written by Edward Neumeier. The cast includes Richard Burgi, Colleen Porch, Lawrence Monoson, Brenda Strong, Ed Lauter, and Cy Carter. The production involved TriStar Pictures, Startroop Pictures Inc., and Tippett Studio.

Produced on a budget of 7 million USD, the film has received generally low ratings from both viewers and critics. It holds a 3.6/10 rating on IMDb based on 26,000 votes and a 4.5/10 rating on TMDB from 731 votes. Film critics provided a rating of 4/10 based on 6 reviews, which is slightly higher than the audience score on IMDb but remains low overall.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls with pieces of cotton glued to them were used as dust clouds. These were then darkened and enlarged using computer technology.
  • The character of Koba was initially written as an Indian man named Haji. However, Sony studio demanded that a Japanese character be included in the film, so Haji became Koba, who was played by American actor of Japanese descent, Brian Tee.
  • The film’s budget amounted to only 5% of the budget of Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction film “Starship Troopers” (1997).
