Touching the Void

Touching the Void recounts the true story of British climbers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, who in 1985 attempted the previously unclimbed west face of Siula Grande, a remote peak in the Peruvian Andes. They reach the summit, but the descent turns into a struggle for survival in worsening weather. This is a dramatized documentary: actors Brendan Mackey and Nicholas Aaron play Simpson and Yates, while the two men also appear as themselves, alongside Ollie Ryall and Richard Hawking in the corresponding roles. The film is based on Simpson's account of the climb.

Kevin Macdonald directed; it is the first of the 13 films he has directed in chronological order, followed by The Last King of Scotland. John Smithson produced, and the film was made in the United Kingdom by Film4 Productions, the UK Film Council and DSP. Released in 2003, it runs 106 minutes and blends Action, Adventure, Documentary and Drama.

The film drew a worldwide box office of about 14 million USD. On IMDb it holds 7.9/10 from roughly 40,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6/10 from about 480 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3/10 from 135 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores, indicating strong professional approval alongside solid viewer regard.
