The Eternal Memory

The Eternal Memory is a documentary about Augusto Góngora and Paulina Urrutia, a couple who have shared twenty-five years of their lives together. Augusto, a Chilean journalist known for his reporting on crimes committed under the Pinochet regime, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease eight years ago. The film follows the couple as his memory gradually declines and Paulina takes on the role of his caregiver, holding on to his identity and his past. Their private story is set against a broader reflection on memory and a country still carrying the traces of its history.

Maite Alberdi directed and wrote the film, and produced it with Pablo Larraín and Juan de Dios Larraín. The cast consists of Augusto Góngora and Paulina Urrutia appearing as themselves, with archive footage of figures including Gustavo Cerati, Pedro Lemebel, Javier Bardem and Raúl Ruiz. The film runs 85 minutes and was released in 2023. It sits in Alberdi's filmography ahead of her later narrative features, In Her Place and A Child of My Own.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.4 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it averages 8 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of under one hundred votes. The similar ratings indicate a generally favorable response from viewers.
