What's left behind the scenes

  • John Barry was originally supposed to be the composer for the film. However, he soon left the project because Streisand insisted that Barry move from New York to Los Angeles to work on the film's score. As the composer explained, he did not want to work with someone "who was constantly looking over his shoulder."
  • Pat Conroy's bestselling novel "The Prince of Tides" was recommended to Barbra Streisand by Don Johnson, with whom she had a close relationship at the time. Streisand read the novel and decided to make a film based on it with Johnson in the role of Tom. By the time filming began, however, their relationship had faded, and Johnson was not cast in the role.
  • Jurgen Krabbe, who played the world-famous violinist, naturally did not know how to play the violin himself. He turned to two professional musicians who played the piece for him until he memorized the finger movements, which he then reproduced in front of the camera.
  • Initially, Robert Redford acquired the rights to the film, and even intended to direct it himself and play the leading role. Redford planned to invite Barbra Streisand to play the role of the psychologist, but was unable to arrange for a suitable screenplay to be written. Eventually, Redford simply assigned the film rights to Streisand.
  • Preparing for the role, Barbra Streisand consulted with practicing psychiatrists for almost six months.
