Tom Wingo, a dissatisfied Southern teacher and coach, travels to New York after his sister Savannah makes another suicide attempt. There he meets her psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein, who asks him to help her understand the family's painful past. Their sessions draw out a long-buried history of childhood trauma and loss, and an unexpected bond forms between the two as both confront the problems in their own lives.
The film is a drama directed by Barbra Streisand, her second feature after Yentl in 1983 and before The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996. Streisand also produced and stars as Susan Lowenstein opposite Nick Nolte as Tom, with Blythe Danner, Kate Nelligan, Jeroen Krabbé and Melinda Dillon in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Becky Johnston and Pat Conroy.
Released in December 1991, the film cost about 30 million dollars and earned roughly 135 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 from more than 19,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.6 from over 300 votes; critics' rating of 6.6 from 34 reviews is close to the audience score.
