This documentary provides a private tour of the largest exhibition ever dedicated to the 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the retrospective featured works borrowed from museums worldwide, allowing viewers to see famous paintings such as The Milkmaid and Girl with a Pearl Earring together for the first time. Guided by the museum's director and the show's curator, the film explores the creative process and compositional choices behind the artist's work, supported by research from the Mauritshuis and the Rijksmuseum.
The film was directed by David Bickerstaff and is the third in a series of art documentaries, following Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse and Sunflowers. It precedes his later works, including Caravaggio and James McNeill Whistler. Produced by Seventh Art Productions in the United Kingdom, the 90-minute production features Robert Lindsay as the narrator. Since its release on April 18, 2023, the film has functioned as a cinematic extension of the physical gallery experience.
