The American Society of Magical Negroes

Aren, a young Black man, is invited to join a secret organization whose members possess magic and use it toward a single purpose: making life easier for white people. Inducted under the guidance of an agent named Roger, Aren is at first drawn in by his new abilities and sense of belonging, but he soon begins to question why he should keep smoothing the way for others, as the society expects its members to do. When he falls for a woman he meets at a café, her presence during one of his assignments puts his loyalty to the group in conflict with what he wants for himself.

The American Society of Magical Negroes is a satirical comedy written and directed by Kobi Libii, here making his feature debut, with Libii also serving as a producer alongside Angel Lopez and Eddie Vaisman. Justice Smith leads the cast as Aren, joined by David Alan Grier as Roger, An Li Bogan as Lizzie, Drew Tarver, Michaela Watkins and Aisha Hinds. The production credits list 39 cast members and 90 crew.

The film was released in March 2024 and runs 105 minutes. Its worldwide box office came to about 2 million USD, a low figure for a wide theatrical release, and audiences have responded poorly: on IMDb it holds 3.8/10 from roughly 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.7/10 from about 157 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 83 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating broadly negative reception across both groups.
