John Berlin, a homicide detective worn down by Los Angeles and by his own struggle with alcohol, takes a job with a small police force in northern California, hoping for a quieter life. He arrives to find a murder investigation already under way, one that appears to be the work of a serial killer who has been targeting blind young women. Berlin pursues theories his new colleagues dismiss, and his inquiries lead him to Helena Robertson, a blind woman who may have heard the killer. The case strains his relationship with the local department, and suspicion turns on Berlin himself.

Bruce Robinson wrote and directed the film, his third behind the camera after Withnail & I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising, and his fourth feature as director would not come until The Rum Diary. Andy García plays Berlin, with Uma Thurman as Helena. Lance Henriksen, Kathy Baker, Graham Beckel and Kevin Conway round out the main cast, among 28 credited performers and 50 credited crew members.

Made for about 20 million dollars and released by Paramount in November 1992, the film returned roughly 11 million worldwide, well short of its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 20,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 423. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 22 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
