Eat Drink Man Woman

In Taipei, a widowed master chef named Chu lives with his three adult daughters, all still unmarried. The household's emotional life revolves around the elaborate Sunday dinners he prepares, a ritual that stands in for the affection the family struggles to express directly. Each daughter is pursuing her own path: one teaches, one works in aviation, and the youngest holds a job at a fast-food outlet while studying. As new relationships enter their lives, the old routines and assumptions about the family begin to shift, and the father's carefully ordered world changes with them.

Ang Lee directed and co-wrote the film with James Schamus and Wang Huiling. It was the third of the fourteen features he has directed, following The Wedding Banquet and preceding Sense and Sensibility. The cast includes Sihung Lung as Mr. Chu, Yang Kuei-Mei, Wu Chien-Lien and Wang Yu-wen as the daughters, with Sylvia Chang and Winston Chao. It was made with Good Machine, Ang Lee Productions, Samuel Goldwyn Company and Central Motion Picture Corporation, and took about 7 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 7.8/10 from around 25,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6/10 from roughly 422 votes, while critics gave it 7.7/10 across 49 reviews. The audience and critical scores sit close together, indicating broad agreement on the film's merits.
