Corrina, Corrina

Corrina, Corrina is a 1994 American comedy-drama set in the 1950s. Manny Singer, who writes jingles for television commercials, is left to raise his young daughter Molly after his wife dies. The loss leaves Molly unable to speak, and Manny's attempts to find someone to look after her come to nothing until he hires Corrina Washington, a housekeeper with a strong personality and little talent for cooking. She gradually draws Molly out of her silence and becomes a steady presence in the household, while the bond forming between Corrina and Manny draws disapproval from the people around them.

The film was directed by Jessie Nelson, who also wrote the screenplay, and was her first feature as director. Whoopi Goldberg plays Corrina, Ray Liotta plays Manny and Tina Majorino plays Molly, with Wendy Crewson, Larry Miller and Erica Yohn among the supporting cast. Around 41 performers and 72 crew members are credited.

Made for about 13 million dollars, the film took roughly 20 million dollars worldwide, a modest return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from 469 votes, while a critics' score of 5.3 from 19 reviews sits below that audience figure. Nelson went on to direct I Am Sam and, later, Love the Coopers.
