Short description
Gwen Cummings is a New York writer whose drinking has begun to take over her life. After a drunken car accident on her sister's wedding day, a court gives her a choice between jail and a rehabilitation clinic, and she reluctantly enters a 28-day programme. Convinced she does not have a problem, she resists the rules and looks down on the other patients, gradually confronting the habits that brought her there.
Betty Thomas directed the film, her fourth feature after The Brady Bunch Movie, Private Parts and Doctor Dolittle, from a screenplay by Susannah Grant. Sandra Bullock plays Gwen, with Viggo Mortensen as Eddie Boone, Dominic West as Jasper, Elizabeth Perkins as Lily Cummings, Azura Skye as Andrea and Steve Buscemi as Cornell. Celia D. Costas produced for Columbia Pictures and Tall Trees Productions, and the film runs 103 minutes.
Released in April 2000, the production had a budget of about 43 million dollars and took roughly 62 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences are split on it: on IMDb it holds 6.1 from around 57,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from about 1,100 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.6 from 85 reviews, so reviewers were less positive than viewers.

- Gwen (Sandra Bullock) appears in the film wearing a t-shirt with a picture of Lili Brick.
- Before filming scenes where her character shakes, Sandra Bullock would drink a triple shot of espresso.
- Preparing for her role in this film, Sandra Bullock spent some time in a rehabilitation clinic.
- During group therapy sessions, drawings are shown in the background. A significant portion of them were created by patients from rehabilitation clinics.
- Six cakes were baked for filming the wedding scene. One was used during a test shoot (a stuntwoman fell on it to see how it would look). Director Betty Thomas was unaware of this, but two wooden skewers were placed inside the cake to give it stability. Fortunately, the stuntwoman did not hit them during her fall and, consequently, was not injured.
- The episode with sex in a wheelchair-accessible elevator is based on a real case where people with uncontrollable sexual urges would sneak away from group therapy sessions to indulge their addiction in the elevator. They believed they wouldn't be caught there.
- It took 2 weeks to create three chains of different sizes.
- In reality, Sandra Bullock is allergic to horses.
