Hart's War
Short description
Hart's War is set during the Second World War inside a German prisoner-of-war camp for American soldiers. Lieutenant Thomas Hart, a law student before the war, is captured and sent to the camp, where the senior American officer, Colonel William McNamara, assigns him to an enlisted men's barracks rather than the officers' quarters. Two Black fighter pilots arrive at the camp and are housed there as well, where they face hostility from other prisoners. A killing follows, and the German commandant allows the prisoners to conduct their own tribunal. Hart, drawing on his legal training, is asked to defend the accused man, while McNamara pursues plans of his own.
The film was directed by Gregory Hoblit, its fourth feature after Primal Fear, Fallen and Frequency. Billy Ray and Terry George wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Bruce Willis as McNamara and Colin Farrell as Hart, with Terrence Howard as Lieutenant Lincoln Scott, Marcel Iureș as the German commandant, Cole Hauser and Linus Roache. It was produced by David Foster, Arnold Rifkin and Hoblit.
Released in February 2002, the film had a budget of about 70 million US dollars and took roughly 32 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 58,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 from about 1,100 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 121 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Participation in the film became the last notable work in cinema for the young actor Jonathan Brandis. Scenes with his involvement were cut during editing, which led Brandis to fall into depression and commit suicide in 2003.
- Toby Maguire and Edward Norton auditioned for the lead role.
- The film is based on John Katzenbach's novel "Hart's War" (1999).
- Originally, Alfonso Cuarón was planned to direct the film, but he preferred to give up the director's chair to Gregory Hoblit and filmed "Y Tu Mamá También" instead.
