At a large public college, a computer error assigns a female student named Alex to share a dorm room with two male students, Eddy and Stuart. The two men react to their new roommate in different ways, and the three eventually become close friends. Over time the arrangement turns into a confused love triangle: Stuart is drawn to Alex, Alex is drawn to Eddy, and Eddy, who is uncertain about his own sexuality, finds himself increasingly interested in Stuart. The shifting feelings among the roommates lead them to try to define the terms of their relationship.

Andrew Fleming directed and wrote the screenplay, following his 1988 debut Bad Dreams and preceding later films such as The Craft and Dick. The cast includes Lara Flynn Boyle as Alex, Stephen Baldwin as Stuart and Josh Charles as Eddy, with supporting roles played by Alexis Arquette, Martha Gehman and Mark Arnold. The film runs 93 minutes and was produced by Motion Picture Corporation of America with TriStar Pictures, taking about 15 million dollars worldwide.

Audience responses were moderate and divided: on IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from about 247 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 from 27 reviews places it below those viewer scores.
