Taipei Story follows a couple in contemporary Taipei whose long relationship is strained by their different ideas about the future. Chin works in an architects' office and wants to build a career and perhaps leave Taiwan, while her partner Lung, a former baseball player who now deals in traditional fabrics, remains attached to his sporting past and to old loyalties that lead him to spend his savings helping her father out of debt. The two have known each other since childhood, and the affection between them is genuine, but their plans no longer point in the same direction.
The film is Edward Yang's first feature, made in 1985 and preceding Terrorizers, A Brighter Summer Day, A Confucian Confusion and Yi Yi in his filmography. Yang wrote the screenplay with Hou Hsiao-hsien and Chu Tien-wen, and Hou also plays Lung opposite Tsai Chin as Chin; the cast includes Wu Nien-Jen, Lin Hsiu-Ling, Su-Yun Ko and Ko I-Chen.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from roughly 4,800 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 from 142 votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from six reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, suggesting a film that has been received favourably by critics and well liked by viewers who seek it out.
