Short description

Futureworld is a 1976 science fiction thriller set in the Delos amusement park, two years after a disaster in which robots turned on the guests. The park has been rebuilt with major investment, and its operators invite two journalists, Chuck Browning and Tracy Ballard, to inspect the improved facilities and report on them. Before they arrive, Browning is approached by a dying man who gives him a clue that something at the park is not what it seems, and the reporters begin looking into what is really going on behind the official presentation.

The film is a sequel to Westworld and was directed by Richard T. Heffron, its place among his films following Toma (1973) and preceding The French Revolution (1989) and No Greater Love (1995). Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner play the two reporters, with Arthur Hill as Dr. Duffy, John P. Ryan as Dr. Mort Schneider and Stuart Margolin as Harry Croft; Yul Brynner appears as the Gunslinger. George Schenck and Mayo Simon wrote the screenplay, and Samuel Z. Arkoff, Heffron and James T. Aubrey produced.

Made for about 3 million dollars and released in July 1976, the film took in roughly 4 million dollars worldwide. It holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from 374 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5 out of 10 from 11 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The first film to use 3D computer graphics. Computer graphics were used here to animate a face and a hand. The animated hand was a digitized version of Ed Catmull's left hand, borrowed from his 1972 film 'A Computer Animated Hand.' The animated face was borrowed from Fred Park's 1974 film.
  • The working title was 'Did No One Understand the First Time?', but it was shot down because the producers didn't like the film's title being in the form of a question.
  • The film uses the set of the main character's apartment from Michael Anderson's sci-fi film 'Logan's Run' (1976), repurposed as a bar set in 'The World of the Future'.
  • Yul Brynner's final role.
