Frantic

An American doctor arrives in Paris with his wife, planning to attend a medical conference and revisit the city where they once spent their honeymoon. While he is in the shower at their hotel, she disappears, along with one of their suitcases. He had noticed at the airport that he picked up the wrong bag, and as he tries to trace it, he finds that the police, the hotel staff and the embassy have little patience for his problem. With no grasp of French and no official help, he sets out on his own, and his search brings him into contact with a young Frenchwoman who is mixed up with dangerous people and who plainly knows more than she admits.

Roman Polanski directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Gérard Brach. It is the eleventh of the twenty-three films he has directed, arriving between Pirates and Bitter Moon. Harrison Ford plays the doctor, with Emmanuelle Seigner as Michelle, Betty Buckley as his wife, and supporting turns from Dominique Pinon, Jacques Ciron and John Mahoney among a credited cast of forty-four.

The film was released in February 1988 and runs two hours. Made for about twenty million dollars, it took in roughly eighteen million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from around sixty-one thousand votes, and on TMDB a 6.7 from about eleven hundred; a critics' score of 6.5 from forty-four reviews is close to those audience figures, suggesting a fairly even response across both groups.
