Crazy/Beautiful
Short description
Crazy/Beautiful is set at Pacific Palisades High, where Carlos Nuñez, a driven Latino student from a poor background, meets Nicole Oakley, the rebellious daughter of a wealthy congressman. Their fling begins as a provocation on her side, but it turns into a real attachment. Carlos is working hard toward admission to a naval academy, while Nicole's self-destructive behavior and her father's disapproval, along with the objections of friends and family on both sides, put pressure on the relationship.
John Stockwell directed the film as his first feature, from a screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, with Rachel Pfeffer and Harry J. and Mary Jane Ufland producing. Kirsten Dunst plays Nicole and Jay Hernandez plays Carlos, with Bruce Davison as Tom Oakley and supporting turns from Herman Osorio, Miguel Castro and Tommy De La Cruz among a credited cast of 47. Released in June 2001, the Touchstone Pictures drama runs 99 minutes.
Made for a modest 13 million dollars, it took in about 20 million worldwide, a small return by studio standards. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from roughly 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6/10 from just over 400 votes, a narrower and slightly warmer sample. Stockwell went on to direct Blue Crush the following year.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jay Hernandez doesn't speak Spanish well enough to speak it fluently, so he memorized many of his lines by ear.
- At the twenty-first minute, when Nicole, Carlos, and Maddie are driving in the car, Carlos is sitting alone in the back seat. In the next shot, Nicole moves to sit with him, and a moment later she is sitting in the front again.
- Many of the school scenes were actually filmed in a school building. The school principal really wanted students from that same school to be used as extras, even though they had no acting experience.
