Short description
Nine years after Jesse and Céline met by chance in Vienna and spent a single night walking the city, their paths cross again in Paris. Jesse, an American writer, is on a European tour promoting a novel based on that night. Céline, who lives in Paris, shows up at his final reading. With only a short time before Jesse must leave for his flight home, the two walk through the city, talking in cafés, parks and along the Seine. Both are involved with other people and Jesse has a son, yet the closeness they once felt returns as they discuss their lives, relationships and hopes.
Richard Linklater directed and produced, and wrote the screenplay with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. It is the eighth of the twenty-two films he has directed, following The School of Rock and preceding Bad News Bears. Hawke and Delpy play Jesse and Céline, with supporting parts for Vernon Dobtcheff, Louise Lemoine Torrès, Rodolphe Pauly and Mariane Plasteig. Shot for about 3 million USD, it took roughly 16 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 8.1/10 from around 313,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8/10 from about 3,900 votes. A critics' rating of 8.6/10 from 181 reviews places it above both audience scores.

- Filming of the movie took only 15 days.
- Julie Delpy’s parents, Marie Piéye and Albert Delpy, appeared in the film in cameo roles. Additionally, real childhood photographs of Delpy can be seen on the wall in Céline’s apartment at the end of the film.
- Julie Delpy herself wrote the song she performs in the film. In 2003, she released a musical album, three songs from which were included in the film’s soundtrack: A Waltz For A Night, An Ocean Apart, and Je t’aime tant.
