Four Daughters

Four Daughters centres on Olfa, a Tunisian mother raising four daughters. When her two elder daughters disappear, the loss leaves a void that the film sets out to explore. Director Kaouther Ben Hania, who also wrote the screenplay, builds an unusual arrangement around this family: professional actresses are brought in to stand alongside Olfa and her younger children, replaying and reworking their shared history. The result moves between recollection and performance, examining a household shaped by affection and discipline as well as by the wider pressures of Tunisian society. Majd Mastoura appears as a man in the piece, while Nour Karoui and Ichraq Matar take on the roles of the absent daughters.

The film was made as a co-production between Tunisia, France, Germany and Saudi Arabia. It followed Ben Hania's The Man Who Sold His Skin, released in 2021, and preceded The Voice of Hind Rajab in 2025. Olfa Hamrouni, Eya Chikahoui and Tayssir Chikhaoui appear as themselves.

Four Daughters has drawn a critics' rating of 8.1 out of 10 from 83 reviews, while audiences rate it 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 4,400 votes and 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. The gap between the two suggests the film was received more warmly by critics than by the general public. Running 108 minutes, it blends documentary and drama.
