Far from Heaven

Set in Hartford, Connecticut, in the autumn of 1957, Far from Heaven centres on Cathy Whitaker, a housewife whose polished life as a wife, mother and local society figure is carefully maintained. Her husband Frank runs the local branch of a television manufacturer, and the household includes a maid, Sybil, and a gardener, Raymond Deagan. When Cathy discovers that Frank has been seeking comfort elsewhere, the marriage begins to break down, and she finds companionship with Raymond. The relationship draws disapproval from those around her, in a town where racial and sexual boundaries are firmly enforced, and the couple's efforts to repair their marriage unfold against that pressure.

Todd Haynes directed and wrote the film, his fourth feature, following Poison, Safe and Velvet Goldmine and preceding I'm Not There. Julianne Moore plays Cathy, with Dennis Quaid as Frank, Dennis Haysbert as Raymond, Patricia Clarkson as Eleanor Fine, Viola Davis as Sybil and James Rebhorn as Dr. Bowman. Produced by Christine Vachon and Jody Patton, it was made for about 14 million dollars and took roughly 29 million worldwide.
