Lord of the Flies
Short description
A military evacuation flight goes down over the ocean, leaving a group of schoolboys stranded on a remote tropical island with no adults and no immediate hope of rescue. At first the boys pull together to survive, but as life on the island settles into a routine, disagreements over how to run things grow into a struggle for power. The group splits in two, and the conflict between them turns violent. The story is based on William Golding's novel.
Harry Hook directed the film, with a screenplay by Jay Presson Allen and production by Lewis M. Allen and Ross Milloy. It was Harry Hook's second feature film, following The Kitchen Toto. The cast is led by Balthazar Getty as Ralph, Chris Furrh as Jack Merridew, Danuel Pipoly as Piggy and James Badge Dale as Simon, with Andrew Taft and Edward Taft as the twins; 28 performers are credited. Released in March 1990, the film runs 91 minutes and took in about 14 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 36,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.4 out of 10, from far fewer votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Chris Furrh also starred in another film that same year about a group of teenagers stranded on a deserted island. It was the television drama 'Exile' (1990).
- Filming took place in August – September 1988 in Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Jamaica.
- Several weeks before filming began, Baltasar Getty fell from a tree and broke both wrists. Despite such a serious injury, the director insisted on his casting and even decided to incorporate it into the script, with a significant portion of the film featuring his character with his arm bandaged while the actor's fracture healed.
- In William Golding's book and the earlier 1963 adaptation, the boys were British, but here they become students at an American military school and belong to different racial and ethnic groups.
