Typhoon Club follows six junior high school students in a Tokyo suburb during the five days surrounding a violent typhoon. As the storm bears down, the teenagers find themselves stranded overnight in their school, where the forced closeness stirs up mischief, tenderness and early sexual feelings alongside darker impulses. The film is a study of adolescence on the edge of adulthood, and the storm becomes both a literal event and a force that unsettles the routines of the town around them.
Shinji Sōmai directed from a screenplay by Yuji Kato. The film was released in Japan in 1985, the same year as Sōmai's Love Hotel and several years before Moving, and runs 115 minutes. Its cast includes Tomokazu Miura as the teacher Umemiya, Yuichi Mikami, Shigeru Benibayashi, Toshiyuki Matsunaga, Youki Kudoh and Yuka Ônishi as the students at the centre of the story.
The film is a Japanese drama produced by Kuzui Enterprises, Art Theatre Guild and Directors Company. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from about 1,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 9 out of 10, drawn from a handful of reviews, places it considerably higher than the audience scores.
