Amar Singh Chamkila tells the story of a singer from humble beginnings in Punjab whose bold lyrics bring him both fame and fierce criticism. As his popularity grows across the region, he has to deal with the pressures of sudden success and the hostility his songs provoke. The film follows his rise and the partnership with Amarjot Kaur that comes to define his career, ending with his premature death.
Imtiaz Ali directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Sajid Ali, and also produces alongside Mohit Choudhary. The film is the sixth feature Ali directed, arriving after Jab We Met, Rockstar, Tamasha and Love Aaj Kal. Diljit Dosanjh plays Chamkila, with Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot Kaur. The supporting cast includes Apindereep Singh, Anjum Batra, Rahul Mittra and Nisha Bano. It is a drama with music at its centre, running 146 minutes.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.8 from around 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.7 from a much smaller base of 34 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 24 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broadly similar levels of approval. Released in April 2024, the film is an Indian production from Reliance Entertainment, Window Seat Films, Select Media Holdings-Moving Pictures and Saregama Productions.
