Short description
May is a 2003 American horror film written and directed by Lucky McKee in his feature debut. Angela Bettis plays the title character, a veterinary assistant whose awkward manner and lazy eye have left her isolated since childhood. Her closest companion is a doll her mother gave her, and she keeps it with her as an adult in Los Angeles, where she works at an animal clinic and struggles to form relationships with the people around her.
Her hopes fix on Adam, a young man she becomes infatuated with, and later on Polly, a co-worker. When these attachments fail, May's disappointment turns destructive, and her familiarity with surgical instruments shapes what she does with that anger. Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, James Duval, Nichole Hiltz and Kevin Gage appear alongside Bettis among a credited cast of 26. Marius Weisberg and Scott Sturgeon produced.
The film opened in April 2003 and runs 93 minutes, mixing comedy, drama, horror and romance. It was the first of eleven features McKee has directed, followed chronologically by The Woods and Sick Girl in 2006, Red in 2008, The Woman in 2011, All Cheerleaders Die in 2013, Tales of Halloween in 2015, Blood Money in 2017, Kindred Spirits and Deathcember in 2019, and Old Man in 2022. On IMDb and TMDB, audience ratings sit at 6.6 from 741 votes, slightly above the critics' rating of 6.2 from 71 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The girl who asks May a question is dressed as a zombie cheerleader. In reality, she is wearing a costume and made up to look exactly like the character from Lucky McKee's debut film, "All Cheerleaders Die" (1999).
- Initially, the film began with a long introduction showing May as a child. It turned out, however, that too much screen time was spent on 'building up,' and many scenes were cut. The opening scenes with adult May, and especially the first scene with the doll, were shot quickly and only to emphasize the heroine's loneliness as soon as possible.
