Brian Kessler, a journalist, and his girlfriend Carrie, a photographer, are preparing a book about notorious American serial killers. To research the places where these crimes happened, they set out on a car journey across the country. Because money is tight, they advertise for travel companions to share fuel costs, and take along Early Grayce, recently out of prison, and his girlfriend Adele. As the trip goes on, Early's behaviour grows increasingly erratic, and Brian and Carrie begin to suspect they are sharing their car with a killer.

Kalifornia was released in 1993 and runs 118 minutes. It was the first feature directed by Dominic Sena, who went on to make Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfish, Whiteout and Season of the Witch. The screenplay is by Stephen Levy and Tim Metcalfe. Brad Pitt plays Early Grayce, with David Duchovny as Brian, Juliette Lewis as Adele, Michelle Forbes as Carrie, and Sierra Pecheur and John Dullaghan in supporting roles.

Made for about nine million dollars, the film returned roughly two million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 62,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from about 905 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 32 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
