Horror Island follows a financially struggling businessman who arranges a treasure-hunting excursion to the island associated with the pirate Sir Henry Morgan. The trip takes a darker turn when the participants run into a mysterious phantom and a murder, turning what began as a scheme to make money into something far more dangerous.
The film was directed by George Waggner, whose other credits in chronological order include Guilty Trail, The Wolf Man and Tangier. It was written by Maurice Tombragel and Victor McLeod and produced by Ben Pivar for Universal Pictures. Dick Foran plays Bill Martin, with Leo Carrillo, Peggy Moran, Fuzzy Knight, John Eldredge and Lewis Howard in supporting roles.
Released in March 1941, the film runs sixty minutes and mixes comedy, crime, horror, mystery and thriller elements. It sits between two better-known entries in its director's filmography, arriving the same year as The Wolf Man, and its brief runtime reflects the era's appetite for compact double-feature programming. Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from about 1,100 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.8 from a much smaller group of 33 votes.
