Karen and Markus live with their children in the home where Karen grew up. When Karen's sister, Jule, visits with her own family to celebrate Markus's birthday, the fundamental differences between the two women create friction. While Karen exerts a domineering influence over the household, Jule feels a drive to rebel against her sister, fueled by dark memories of their late mother. This tension builds as other family members align against Karen, eventually leading to a destructive climax that clears away the past to make room for something new.
