Darkness

Darkness is a horror film about an American family that moves into a large, long-abandoned house in the Spanish countryside. Regina, a teenage girl, her younger brother Paul, and their parents Maria and Mark try to settle into their new home, but the house soon proves to be more than it seems. Paul becomes convinced that something invisible is present in the house, while Mark's behaviour grows increasingly erratic and violent. As unsettling events multiply, Regina comes to suspect that the house holds a dark secret connected to its past, and that an approaching solar eclipse may bring matters to a head.

The film was directed by Jaume Balagueró, who wrote the screenplay with Fernando de Felipe, and it was produced by Julio Fernández and Brian Yuzna. It was Balagueró's first feature, made before Fragile, [REC] and the later films in his filmography. Anna Paquin plays Regina, with Lena Olin and Iain Glen as her parents, and Giancarlo Giannini, Fele Martínez and Fermí Reixach in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 11 million USD and took 34 million USD worldwide.

Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from around 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7/10 from 441 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.1/10 from 56 reviews places it well below the audience scores.
