Striking Distance

Striking Distance is a 1993 crime thriller set in Pittsburgh, where Bruce Willis plays Tom Hardy, a homicide detective who has been moved to the river patrol after publicly claiming that a serial killer is a police officer. When a new string of murders begins, Hardy becomes convinced the same man is responsible, and he carries out an investigation of his own, aided mainly by his partner, Jo Christman, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. The film's cast also includes Dennis Farina, Tom Sizemore, Brion James and Robert Pastorelli.

The film was directed by Rowdy Herrington, who wrote the screenplay with Marty Kaplan; it was Herrington's third feature, following Road House in 1989 and Gladiator in 1992, and Arnon Milchan and Kaplan produced. Made for about 30 million dollars, it took in roughly 77 million worldwide, so it recovered its cost comfortably without becoming a major hit.

Audience response was mixed: it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 48,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from roughly a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 25 reviews indicates reviewers were considerably less positive than audiences. Its 102-minute running time places it among the standard studio thrillers of its era.
