Short description

Joe Moore is a career thief who loves his work, but a jewellery robbery goes wrong when a security camera captures him in the act, and he has to abandon the tape. He expects to collect his share from Bergman, the fence who finances his jobs, and retire. Instead Bergman refuses to pay and pressures him into one more score, with Bergman's nephew Jimmy sent along to keep watch on the crew. Joe's wife Fran and his partners Bobby Blane and Pinky Pincus are drawn into a plan that leaves him unsure whom he can trust.

David Mamet directed and wrote the film, the fifth of the nine features he has directed, following The Spanish Prisoner. Gene Hackman plays Joe, with Danny DeVito as Bergman, Delroy Lindo as Bobby, Sam Rockwell as Jimmy, Rebecca Pidgeon as Fran and Ricky Jay as Pinky; Art Linson, Elie Samaha and Andrew Stevens produced.

Released in November 2001, the film runs 107 minutes. Against a budget of 35 million dollars it returned about 29 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 39,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from a much smaller sample, while a critics' rating stands at 6.3 from 131 reviews, so audiences and critics are close in their assessment.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the US, the film was released immediately after the movie 'The Score' (2001), which adversely affected the film's box office earnings and public reception.
  • At the beginning of the film, Ricky Jay carries a stack of books, among which one titled "The Magic of Barcelona" can be spotted. This is a nod to Jay himself, who is well-known as a magician and illusionist.
  • Gene Hackman mentioned in several interviews that he felt a certain awkwardness and stiffness on the set of this film because he was older than the other members of the production. As a result, he kept to himself on set, which to some extent helped him portray a man who feels like an outsider among others.
