Short description
Set in 1965, Riding in Cars with Boys follows Beverly Donofrio, a bright teenager who intends to go to college and become a writer. Her plans change when she becomes pregnant at fifteen, marries Ray, the boy involved, and leaves school, while her father largely turns away from her. Ray proves unable to hold the family together, and money she saves for her education disappears into his drug use, leaving Beverly to raise their son and reconsider her life.
The film was directed by Penny Marshall, the seventh of the seven features she directed between 1986 and 2001, and written by Morgan Ward. Drew Barrymore plays Beverly, with Steve Zahn as Ray, Brittany Murphy as her friend Fay, James Woods as her father Leonard and Lorraine Bracco as her mother Teresa. Its credited cast runs to 75 people and its crew to 111.
Made for a budget reported at 48 million USD, the film took about 36 million USD worldwide, less than it cost. Critics rated it 5.7 out of 10 across 107 reviews, while audiences have been more favourable: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from 32,000 votes and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from 493 votes.

- Beverly D'Onofrio has a PhD, while Drew Barrymore, who portrays her in the film, was expelled from school for poor academic performance.
- The prototypes for the main characters, Beverly and Jason D'Onofrio, are depicted as guests in the wedding scene. They are sitting behind Drew Barrymore.
