In a near-future society, many people carry brain implants that record everything they see and hear from birth onward. When a person dies, the implant is removed and the footage is edited into a commemorative film shown at the funeral. Alan Hakman works as a cutter, one of the most sought-after editors in this trade, known for his ability to handle the compromising material of wealthy clients. His detachment from the lives he assembles has left him remote, and his latest assignment draws him into danger when the recordings of a prominent lawyer, whose widow commissions the work, touch on events connected to his own childhood.
The film is directed by Omar Naim, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was his first feature; his only later directing credit listed here is Becoming, from 2020. Robin Williams stars as Alan W. Hakman, with Mira Sorvino as Delila, Jim Caviezel as Fletcher, and supporting turns from Mimi Kuzyk, Stephanie Romanov and Genevieve Buechner among a credited cast of 54. Nick Wechsler produced.
Released in October 2004, the film made about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from roughly 36,000 votes, and on TMDB a matching 6.1 from around 794 votes, while its critics' score stands lower at 5.3 from 81 reviews.
